Albania Language Phrasebook: 100+ Essential Phrases

What language is spoken in Albania?

Albanian (Shqip) is the official language. It is unrelated to neighboring Slavic, Greek, or Romance languages. English is widely spoken in tourist areas, cities, and by younger Albanians. A few Albanian phrases earn enormous goodwill.

Albanian Language Phrasebook: Over 100 Phrases for Travelers

Albanian (Shqip) is one of the most linguistically isolated languages in Europe — it belongs to its own branch of the Indo-European family with no close living relatives. It does not sound like Greek, Serbian, Italian, or any other neighboring language, and most words have no obvious connection to familiar European vocabulary.

This can be intimidating, but it is also liberating. Albanians have low expectations for foreigners knowing any of their language. Even a simple “Faleminderit” (thank you) or “Mirë” (good) produces a reaction of genuine delight. Learning a few phrases is one of the highest-return investments you can make for an Albanian trip.

This extended phrasebook covers 100+ phrases organized by situation. For the basic essentials, see the Albania language basics guide.

Pronunciation Guide

Albanian has a consistent phonetic system — words are generally pronounced as written, once you know the rules.

Key pronunciation notes:

  • Ă« (schwa): pronounced like the “u” in “butter” — a neutral unstressed vowel
  • ç sounds like “ch” in “church”
  • xh sounds like “j” in “judge”
  • gj sounds like a soft “dy” sound (like “d” followed by “y”)
  • ll is a thick “l” sound, heavier than English “l”
  • rr is a rolled/trilled “r”
  • q sounds like a soft “ky” sound
  • j sounds like “y” in “yes”
  • sh sounds like “sh” in “ship”
  • zh sounds like “s” in “measure”
  • dh sounds like “th” in “this” (voiced)
  • th sounds like “th” in “think” (unvoiced)

The crucial cultural note — head movements: Albanians shake their head side-to-side for YES and nod up-down for NO. This is the opposite of most Western conventions. This will confuse you the first several times. Use verbal confirmation when accuracy matters.

Useful Expressions Unique to Albanian Culture

“Mirë se erdhe” — Welcome (said by hosts to guests). If someone says this, respond with “Mirë se jam” (literally “it’s good that I am here”).

“Bujrum” — Come in / here you go / please. This Turkish-origin word is used constantly in Albanian. A shopkeeper handing you something says “Bujrum.” Someone inviting you to sit says “Bujrum.”

“Ça bëjmë?” — What do we do? / How are things? A casual all-purpose greeting/question.

“Lavdi” — Glory. Used in expressions of admiration and in historical-patriotic contexts.

“Shpirtit” — Dear soul / sweetheart. An affectionate term used between friends and in warm contexts. If your guesthouse host calls you “shpirtit,” you are doing well.

The Albania customs and etiquette guide explains the cultural context behind these expressions and many other cultural behaviors.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Albanian Language

How difficult is Albanian for English speakers?

Albanian is considered moderately difficult for English speakers. The grammar has some complex features (noun cases, a distinction between definite and indefinite forms of nouns, verb conjugations). However, the phonetic spelling system means that once you learn the pronunciation rules, words are read as written. For basic travel communication, a small set of phrases and polite expressions is entirely sufficient — most urban Albanians and tourism workers speak functional English.

Do Albanians speak English?

Younger Albanians (under 40) in cities and tourist areas generally speak functional to good English. Older Albanians and people in rural areas are less likely to speak English. Italian is the most widely spoken second foreign language after English, reflecting decades of Italian television reception and Italian immigration/work connections. Greek is spoken in southern border areas.

Are there different dialects of Albanian?

Yes. Albanian has two main dialects: Gheg (spoken in northern Albania and Kosovo) and Tosk (spoken in southern Albania). Standard Albanian (used in schools, government, and media) is based primarily on Tosk. The differences are significant enough that Gheg and Tosk speakers sometimes have difficulty understanding each other fully, though educated speakers can bridge the gap. Travelers will notice different accents and vocabulary between north and south.

What do Albanians call their language?

Albanians call their language Shqip and themselves Shqiptarë (singular: Shqiptar). The word Albania in the Albanian language is Shqipëria. The origin of this name is debated — one common interpretation links it to shqiponjë (eagle), connecting to the double-headed eagle on the national flag.
